What did everyone think about the bench press challenge? This was the first “pure strength” challenge we have had.

Jamie Whincup had his worst showing yet!

I was so impressed with Brett’s performance - 35 presses! Didn’t expect him to go that far…

Big props to Joel too, as 3rd place gets him back in the game…

Lote powered through for so long but just couldn’t get there in the end!

I didnt see this thread so Ill repost what I posted elsewhere in here. Seems like I might stir the pot a bit but oh well.

This was my first episode watched and this event was an outrage an absolute joke! Out of the athletes competing Lote was the one I was hoping would win, mainly because I like rugby union the most. lol. But Once it was shown to be an endurance method of bench pressing at a %of the participants bodyweight I knew Lote had no chance. Rugby guys are all about power, not repetition after repetition. Anyone thats ever touched a weight could recognise that power and endurance are two massively different things. Also, Anyone who has ever touched a weight as well would recognise that a bench press isn’t counted unless you touch your chest. Which makes Billy Slater the true winner!!! The wussy AFL player didnt even bring the bar to his chest on at least 10 of his repetitions! Infact, the highlights package at the end of todays episode, recapped on his poor performance and the bar only touched his chest once out of 5 or 6 repetitions. Such an unfair advantage to stop before you touch the chest and I would almost guarentee he would score 10 less repetitions to score 25 or less then what he did if they were all completed properly (to his chest)Like all other contestants did…

For the show to redeem any credibility, they should disqualify the AFL player or make him do the challenge again, watching his reps so that they are done properly. I recognise the show is about fun as well but his performance was just ridiculously poor and his win was luckier then the lotto.

The soccer player was the biggest suprise package and when you consider he wouldnt train specifally for bench press and he benched better then the AFL player who does, good effort.  In summary, AFL is the weakest football code in Australia.

Why? Compared to the blokes who did it properly he was very unimpressive

I would of liked to see him move 140kg-200kg as hes built to move heavier loads a few times, not small loads many times.

Pound for pound, even if it was a power event with a heavy weight, not an endurance test like they did, I dont see Lote beating Slater or Steve hooker. His 1 rep max would be the highest out of the group though.

They would be better televising thumb fights then what they did. The message of today, cheat to win. Go out there and do things incorrectly kids and you’ll be treated like a winner!

Hey Pickle,

i didn’t notice the non chest reps and I think the other athletes would have complained if they though it was “cheating” but they seemed to agree.

The % of the body weight seemed fair to me. If they had 100 challenges they could have done a series where it was heaviest weight, then most reps etc etc but I guess they had to make it entertaining while still challenging.

Steve Hooker made reference to the Afl players poor form. Doing the test as they did gave a greater chance for the boys who would rarely bench press i.e ky hurst to have a go. Id hardly call people bench pressing light weights entertaining though. Thats why strong man and olympic clean and jerks and snatch are so popular across the world. People like to see unimaginable weights being moved not weights less then their 12 yr old son.

Yep I felt ripped off that it was an endurance event and not a power event.  Top 4 would have been Lotte, Slater, Hooker and Delidio. Not sure on the order as it would still have to be power to weight ratio.

I also notice the AFL cheating but let him go cause I tend to do that at the gym too.

Hey Pickle,

I don’t think the % body weight was necessiarly unfair, as the show has to pick a bench-mark (no pun intended) and use it as their measurement. However, I’d love to do some maths on what was actually moved.  Lotte’s 75% body weight x 20 or so reps probably moved about 2000kg give or take (I can’t find actual numbers on here… what the heck anyway?) If you compare that to the winner, he might have actually pushed 1200kg in his 35 reps.  So for sheer volume of weight moved in the press, Lotte is the clear winner.  But like I said, they have to pick something to measure to win.

Also, although in competitive bench pressing, I think you’re right, they do count to the chest and to full extension at the top, safety dictates that there should be an approximately fist-width gap between the bar and chest. This avoids hyper-extending through the shoulder and allows the athlete to stay in their maximal lift zone focusing on engaging the pectoral muscles, and reducing shoulder engagement/strain. But this show doesn’t seem too concerend about proper form or they would never have accepted some of those guys last lifts, leading with the right shoulder, lifting with the back and hips and then using momentum to push out the left shoulder and give them one last rep.  Bad bad form!

Just had to get my two cents in about it ... have a good day guys!

I dont know anything about bench presing but I did notice that Brett wasn’t going all the way to his chest. But it looked really hard so whatever im sure they all did it a few times, and im not being bias because i am a rugby league supporter all the way!

Hopefully this isn’t too late and someone is still monitoring this forum…

Just a question about the weights they were lifting.  I was under the impression that the challenge was to lift 75% of the contestants bodyweight as many times as possible, however they appeared to be lifting 75% of their bodyweight PLUS the bar (and I even heard one of the announcers refer to this).

If this is the case then it makes the challenge very unfair as I’m assuming the bar weighs about 20kg, an amount that would severely handicap the smaller competitors due to it being a larger percentage of their bodyweight (not that it seemed to bother Billy or the soccer/AFL blokes).

Could somebody please actually confirm what the athletes were lifting...(75% bodyweight including bar or 75% of bodyweight plus bar)?

Thanks!

Wow, that is a super specific question! I don’t actually know, but I’ll see if I can find out for you. I’ll be monitoring these forums for a while, but I’d advise you join our FB group as that’s where you’ll be able to hear about news for the show - http://www.facebook.com/rexonamen

Woops, sorry mate!  I meant 75% of their bodyweight not 55%.  Have edited the post…
