Don’t discount the driver!

In the opening interviews, I was having a good old chuckle saying to myself, “Don’t discount the driver!”

V8 Supercar drivers are elite athletes.  The endurance that they need is incredible, how many other of the athletes would lose a couple of kilos each time they competed?  They have to cope with temperatures of over 55 degrees in the cars and the first race here in Adelaide is usually the worst.  Just about every year drivers have had to stop due to heat exhaustion.  Again, how many of the other sports does that regularly happen?  This despite the fact that they wear cool-suits that circulate chilled fluid!

By the end of the first episode, quite a few of the others had to eat their words. I predict that will continue and Jamie will finish in the top three at the end of the series. He could struggle with some of the strength one-on-one’s, due to being the second lightest, but should do well in most of the upcoming challenges. As in V8’s you don’t need to win each round to win the series.  Consistency is the key and I believe Jamie will do well.

DON’T DISCOUNT THE DRIVER!

I agree, motor racing drivers are elite athletes, they are undersetimated big time!

Although jamie will not do so well in the later challanges, anything that requires co ordination and timing he will do well at, strength or agility/speed he will struggle.

definately dont discount him. i race go karts and its nowhere near as physical as the v8s, i go home and i hurt the next day because of g forces. it takes alot of strength and stamina to do what he does! GO JAMIE!

i think you will be surprised. most drivers now-a-days find themselves in the gym a lot more than people would expect. you have to have a very high level of fitness to stay as focused as they do for so long

You’d have to think that his upper body strength would be impressive. How many G’s do V8 racers experience?

I think the old sport where you can still be a fatty and win big is golf. Although Tiger Woods has shaken this up by being fit.

Haha… true. But John Daly is doing his best to keep the dream alive.

I still think Whincup is a big chance. The only downfall I could see for him is if he is slow on his feet. Compared to going 300 kph in a V8 car he must feel like a turtle on land. We’ll see how he goes I suppose, but I’m hoping he goes well to prove all those non-believers wrong.

Yeah, he isn’t in any of the video or images at all. Very weird indeed. Seems a bit strange that they didn’t even mention why he wasn’t there as there’s a lot of fans for Jamie out there.

Hey guys,

It was bugging me too that Whincup wasn’t there for the B’Ball challenge so i did some sluething… Don’t want him to lose his dark horse status! Came across the following:

“Jamie Whincup was unable to take part in the basketball due to career commitments when this challenge was undertaken.
As the rules detail, if an athlete can not take part in a challenge for any reason they will be automatically placed in eight position for this specific challenge.”

Hope that clears it up for you.

Thanks Ninj.  Had been wondering myself. Seems a little harsh, but rules is rules. It still doesn’t explain why it wasn’t mentioned in the show.

Hopefully this DNF result won’t be his downfall. You can still win the championship with a DNF, but following it up with some back of the field results won’t help.  He should be able to redeem himself with the upcoming motorsport challenges!
